Academic Advising

After you've completed orientation and assessment, your last step before registering for classes is to meet with an academic advisor. We encourage you to meet with an advisor early so you'll have first pick of the classes you want.

Our team of advisors will meet with you to discuss your educational and career goals, then they'll help you design an academic plan that best fits your needs.

All new students will meet with an academic advisor before registering for classes. An advisor will help you determine which courses to take to earn the degree or certificate of your choice, and if your goal is to transfer to a four year college or university, our advisors will help you with that too.

New Students:  How to make an appointment:

  • Degree Seeking Students - Click on your region's drop-down at the bottom of this page for more information on meeting with an advisor at your campus.
  • Courses Only Students - Call our enrollment team at 855-613-6294 from 11am to 8pm Monday through Saturday to schedule an appointment with an advisor.  If you have applied as a Courses Only student, this will be noted in your acceptance letter.

As a continuing student, you will also have access to an academic advisor who will help you determine which courses to take to complete your degree or certificate program. If your goal is to transfer to a four-year college or university, our advisors will help you with that too. See your campus below and the Current Student Resources (on the right side of this page) for more information.

The campuses below offer online scheduling.

As a full-time student working toward an Associate Degree, you should be aware of the new statewide initiative, 15 to Finish, beginning with the 2014-2015 Academic Year. Our advisors will work with you to develop an academic plan that allows you to complete your degree. For some students it might be in their best interest to take 15 credit hours a semester. These students taking the required 15 credit hours per term should review our free course guarantee (see below) if they are unable to register for a course in their plan because the College has failed to offer the class. Some stipulations do apply, and the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs will help determine if you are eligible.

Free Course Guarantee:

Students who follow their degree maps and find that a course is not available during the term it is listed on the map may be eligible to take that course for free (no cost) during a term the course is available. To be eligible for this free course, a student must meet the following criteria:

  1. The student must have enrolled at Ivy Tech for the first time after July 31, 2014.
  2. The student must be following a full-time (15 credits or more per semester) degree map.
  3. The student must be enrolled in an Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Fine Arts, or Associate of General Studies program.
  4. The student must not need more than six credits of remedial coursework (course numbers beginning with a "0").
  5. The student must have followed his/her degree map in each prior semester by completing each prescribed course.
  6. The student must not have changed majors, or added additional majors to his/her program of study.
  7. The student is unable to register for a course in the current semester degree map because it is not offered, offered only at the same time as another required course in the degree map, or all sections are full. Please note that a course is considered full only if ALL sections are full, not just the one in the student's preferred timeslot. If an online version is available, the course is not considered unavailable, even if that is not the student's preferred method of instruction.
  8. The student must have attempted to register for the course during the regular registration period, that is, up until the last day to add a course to a student's schedule. These dates are publicized on the Ivy Tech website.
  9. The student has not received a revised degree map from his/her advisor that maps the unavailable course into a future semester without altering the student's graduation date.
  10. The student is within 150 percent of the standard time to complete his/her degree (150 percent of an Associate degree is three years).

Please note that other stipulations may apply. Please contact the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs to determine if you are eligible for the free course guarantee.
