COURSE OBJECTIVES

• Exhibit an understanding of and an ability to execute safety practices when using GMAW
• Perform welds using solid wire
• Apply the GMAW short circuit and spray transfer methods to produce quality groove and fillet welds in the horizontal position
• Perform procedures for conducting routine maintenance on gas metal arc welding equipment
• Identify the gases used in GMAW, their advantages and disadvantages
• Identify the five different types of joints

TRAINING DESCRIPTION

This course will provide the student with a thorough understanding of hazards and safety procedures used in gas metal arc welding; metal transfer, shielding gases, and adjustment of equipment. Students will be able to produce quality gas metal arc welds in the horizontal position on stainless steel from 3/16 inch sheet to 1/2 inch plate, single and multiple pass using short circuit and spray transfers. Students will be able to produce quality multiple pass, groove welds, and fillet welds on stainless steel plate in the horizontal position. Students will also learn to troubleshoot problems, apply corrective measures, and perform quality checks on the welds. AWS techniques for visual inspection and mechanical testing will be used to determine quality of welds.
