Workforce and Economic Development
HVAC Building Management Systems

This course will provide for the learner an understanding and application of methods used in calculating building heat loss and gain plus how to use this data in sizing equipment and duct systems for residential and light commercial applications. Includes discussion of methods to reduce building heating/cooling loads, air flow principles, air delivery system design methods, and introduces using a psychometric chart to solve air mixture problems.

BENEFITS TO YOUR ORGANIZATION

  •  Increased Building Management Systems knowledge
  • Increased productivity & skill level of employees

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Demonstrate safe practices and procedures
  • List the factors that affect the rate at which a building will lose or gain heat.
  • Perform a complete heat loss and gain calculation for both sensible and latent heat according using ACCA Manual "J" or equivalent method
  • Describe the methods of reducing energy consumption of the structure covered in this course
  • Describe the typical methods used in framing and building a residential or light commercial structure covered in this course
  • Define and properly use psychometric and duct design terminology
  • Identify and explain all components of the psychometric chart
  • Determine other properties of air when any two properties are given
  • Solve air mixture problems graphically and by calculation
  • Relate air volume, air heat content, and air density and air distribution.
  • Determine equipment requirements for design conditions
  • Given heat loss and gain data for a structure, calculate CFM airflow requirements for each room
  • Given heat loss and gain data for a structure, design a distribution system for the structure to meet CFM air requirements for each room (supply and return ductwork, return air grilles, and supply registers)
  • Given heat loss and gain data for a structure, select heating and cooling equipment
  • List recommended foot per minute air velocities for return, main and branch ducts for different types of structures
