Qualified Medication Aide

Physicians, pharmacists, nurses and Qualified Medication Aides (QMA) are all members of a team responsible for giving residents in extended care environments the correct medications.  This course meets Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) standards for QMA  training and equips participants with the knowledge and skills required to sit for the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) QMA certification exam.

Course objectives

• Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the QMA in health care

• Understand QMA scope of practice

• Become knowledgeable of pharmacology/medication classification, application and effects of medications, medication control and medication orders

• Demonstrate competency in resident care and medication administration procedures according to the Indiana State Department of Health standards

• Utilize knowledge of legal and ethical aspects of health care related to the responsibilities as a QMA and member of the health care team

Training description

This class will prepare participants to perform as a qualified medication aide with the skills, knowledge and attitudes essential to being a productive member of the health care team. The course includes classroom and lab experience according to ISDH standards.  Participants are expected to arrange a supervised practicum experience at their place of employment as a certified nurse aide (CNA).  Prior to acceptance into the course, participants must provide the following:

• Current Indiana Certified Nurse Aide registry without findings

• Documented minimum 1000 hours CNA work experience in the past 24 months

• Proof of high school diploma or GED

• Proof of being at least 18 years of age

• Proof of 2-Step Mantoux TB test

• Other documentation as required by ISDH or Ivy Tech Community College

Hours and cost:

Your Qualified Medication Aide course is a 92-hour training activity, scheduled according to State of Indiana requirements for up to 10 participants.  Pricing includes training administration, instruction, textbooks and course materials, and an activity evaluation at the conclusion of training.  Fees do not include the cost of the state QMA certification exam.
