H.I.R.E. (HELPING INDY REACH EMPLOYMENT) CAMP
(Course ID: WORK HIR1)
This instructor-led interactive course focuses on value clarification, understanding behavioral style differences, and workforce diversity. Participants take the DESA Behavior Index to determine their own personal work style. A game, Diversity Bingo, is one activity utilized to help perceptions and to move towards respecting and valuing differences in the workplace.  The course also will examine useful skills for dealing with change.

The course will focus on the characteristics of exceptional employees. These characteristics include integrity, trustworthiness, attitude, cooperation, reliability, flexibility, adaptability, self-discipline, and motivation. Students will participate in a learning activity, either in a small group, in pairs, or individually, for each of the noted characteristics.

In addition, the course focuses on critical thinking, listening skills, learning styles, problem solving, decision making, and independent thinking. Participants engage in role-playing, puzzles, brainteasers, and case studies designed to elicit solutions through rigorous analysis of complicated work situations.

Finally, the course focuses on identifying sources of workplace conflict and the utilization of effective conflict resolution skills. Participants are introduced to a model for resolving conflict. A role-playing exercise, applying the various conflict resolution techniques and the conflict resolution mode, is part of this dynamic class. Other topics covered include effective communication, assertiveness, behavioral styles and conflict, and dealing with difficult people.

The Computer Concepts curriculum will introduce the student to basic computing fundamentals. It provides an overview of computer hardware, Microsoft Windows, working with files, the Internet, and email.
