Music Synthesizers & Audio Synthesis (Rising Grades 6-8)

From creating the sound of a flute and violin to a screaming electric guitar or alien spaceships, laser beams and other worldly soundscapes, electronic music and sounds created by audio synthesizers have been a staple in music and film soundtracks since their inception. Recent years have seen a huge resurgence of interest in these unique and highly creative audio tools. That sound of a soda can being opened in the commercial you just watched was created by an audio synthesizer! Nearly all the soundtrack and sound effects to your favorite video game or movie were composed and created by these fascinating instruments. You hear them every day and probably aren't aware of it.

In this 1-week introduction to synthesizers, we'll explore the basics of wave shapes and how to use the components to modify the sounds they make, as well as the various types of audio synthesis that are possible through different software options. Participants will also learn about classic synthesizer music and how it's become what we use today, then explore their own interests through creative exercises to help with idea generation to create our own music and other types of audio synthesis.

Throughout the camp, we'll be using open source (free) software synthesizers so you will be able to keep exploring and growing long after the class is over. A few hardware guest stars will make their appearance through the week for a real hands-on experience!

SUPPLIES: All supplies needed for this class will be provided, including MIDI keyboards and headphones, though students are welcome to bring their own equipment if they prefer.

    Acting Techniques: A Practical Survey

Explore the major acting techniques that have shaped modern performance in Constellation’s Acting Techniques: A Practical Survey, a hands-on, process-oriented course designed for adults who want to deepen their understanding of the actor’s craft. Whether you are brand new to acting, returning to the stage after time away, or looking to expand your existing toolkit, this 7-week class offers a practical introduction to several foundational approaches to performance.

Each week, students will investigate a different acting method through discussion, guided exercises, partner work, and short text-based explorations. From Stanislavski’s “Magic If” to Meisner’s active listening, Stella Adler’s imagination work, Lee Strasberg’s sensory recall, Michael Chekhov’s physical technique, Uta Hagen’s object exercises, and Practical Aesthetics’ action-based scene analysis, this course invites actors to discover what works best for them while building greater truth, specificity, and confidence on stage.

Through a combination of acting exercises, improvisational exploration, sensory work, physical practice, object work, and short scene study, students will gain practical experience with a wide range of tools used by actors in rehearsal and performance. This class emphasizes curiosity, experimentation, and artistic risk-taking in a safe, supportive, and collaborative environment.

Rather than focusing on one “right” way to act, Acting Techniques: A Practical Survey encourages students to test-drive different approaches, strengthen their instincts, and leave with a more versatile, adaptable, and confident acting practice.

    Notes:
    - This class may require light outside preparation, including reading short scenes or monologues and practicing exercises between sessions.
    - Attendance is crucial, as each week introduces a different technique and builds toward a broader understanding of the actor’s craft. If you foresee conflicts, please consider joining us for a future class.

    The Art of Physical Comedy

Discover the art of being funny without saying a word. Constellation's The Art of Physical Comedy for adults is a playful, hands-on exploration of the essential principles required for great physical comedy: rhythm and timing, precision, stillness, exaggeration, and surprise. Through movement exercises, partner work, ensemble games, clown-inspired techniques, and silent storytelling, students will learn how the body can be used as a full, comic instrument. The class will focus on building confidence, sharpening physical awareness, and developing a personal comedy toolkit that can be applied to stage performance, character work, improvisation, and everyday theatrical play.

Students will investigate why physical comedy works, how to safely create the illusion of accident or disaster, and how failure, commitment, and vulnerability can become powerful sources of laughter.

Some acting exposure is recommended, though no previous comedy or movement experience is required—only a willingness to move, to play, and to embrace the joy of looking foolish. This is a physically active course; comfortable clothing and a willingness to spend time on the floor are required.
