FAQ's
Can I set an appointment/What are your walk-in hours?

Appointments are not necessary for new students; we have admissions advisors available during walk-in hours on Monday - Friday from 8am - 5pm.

Current students should make an appointment with an advisor in their program.

What is the Admission Process?

Briefly, the process is:

  1. Fill out an application online or print and mail a hard copy
  2. Proof of High School completion (HS Transcript or GED scores)
  3. Transfer students will want a copy of previous college transcripts, also * Successfully complete the COMPASS placement assessment (waiver options available)
  4. Register for classes with an admissions advisor
  5. Attend New Student Orientation

NOTE: International students have additional requirements

Have I been accepted?

If you have completed an application and taken or waived the COMPASS, you are eligible to register for classes.

You will have until the start of your first semester to submit your HS transcript/GED scores, and the New Student Orientation will take place the week before classes start each semester.

How do I register for classes?

For your first semester you can come in to meet with an admissions advisor anytime during walk-in hours Monday - Thursday 8am - 6pm or Friday 8am - 5pm.

After your first semester, you will be able to register via your Campus Connect account or schedule an appointment with an advisor in your program area through our Appointment Manager.

What is the COMPASS assessment?

If you are a full-time or part-time degree or certificate seeking student, or if you plan to enroll in any general education courses, you must participate in an academic skills assessment in writing, reading, mathematics and basic algebra.

COMPASS must be completed prior to registration and the results from this assessment are used by the advisor and the student for course placement purposes. COMPASS is free of charge.

Are there waiver options for the COMPASS?
Waivers will be granted to students who meet one or more of the following conditions:
  • An associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with completed coursework in writing and math with a "C" or better.
  • Completed college courses in writing or math with a "C" or better from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (valid 10 years).
  • ACT score 19 or higher in English, Reading, and Math (scores valid 4 years)
  • SAT score 460 or higher in Verbal and Math (scores valid 4 years).
  • Comparable assessment scores (COMPASS or ASSET) from regionally accredited institution of higher education (valid 2 years). If you feel you qualified for a waiver, you must complete and submit the waiver form at the end of the packet with the appropriate documentation.

NOTE: If you think you qualify for a waiver of all or part of the COMPASS, please complete the COMPASS waiver form and submit it, together with appropriate documentation to the office of the Registrar.

Can I transfer credits TO Ivy Tech - Columbus?

Credits from may be accepted under the following conditions:

  • The school where you took the classes is regionally accredited
  • Classes are no more than 10 - years old
  • Grades for transferable classes must be a "C" or better
  • Ivy Tech must offer a comparable class
  • All transfer credits will be at the discretion of the Dean of Academic Affairs.
  • Request copies of your transcripts
Can I transfer credits FROM Ivy Tech - Columbus?

Ivy Tech is a fully accredited community college, and offers a wide variety of courses that transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Typically, the Office of Admissions at the four-year school where you intend to transfer will determine which Ivy Tech credits will be accepted.

It is highly recommended that you meet with your Ivy Tech advisor early in your first year to create an educational plan for transfer.

Am I an In-State or Out-Of-State student?

If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with an address in the State of Indiana, you are considered an In-State student for the purposes of tuition calculation.

How much is your application fee?

At Ivy Tech we do not require an application fee.

What is the latest I can register?

At Ivy Tech we allow students to register all the way up until the Friday before classes start. We strongly encourage, however, that students register as early as possible so that they may ensure they get the classes and times that they want.

Classes have been filling up more and more quickly every semester.

Can I take classes if I'm still in High School?

You may take classes as a high school student as long as you get written permission from your school to take classes at Ivy Tech.

As a high school student, will my Ivy Tech classes count towards my HS Diploma?
It is up to your high school whether or not they will accept Ivy Tech credits.
