Ivy Tech Community College Receives 2013 Image of Welding Award

Ivy Tech Community College Anderson Campus’ Student Chapter of the American Welding Society (AWS) has been selected as a winner of the 2013 Image of Welding Awards in the AWS section category.  The awards are issued in seven categories and recognize individuals and organizations that have shown exemplary dedication to promoting the image of welding in their communities.

“Our Welding Program, the Student Chapter, and its students have much to be proud of,” said Andy Bowne, chancellor for the East Central Region. “They have gone above and beyond what a student is expected to do and are having award winning impacts on our community.”

The Ivy Tech Student Chapter of the AWS has been in existence for more than a year and half, but has hit the ground running with ideas and projects to benefit the school and community.  Their first major project involved making a steel sculpture representing a graduating student that now stands in front of the Ivy Tech Anderson 53rd Street campus.  Other community projects include rebuilding a pontoon trailer, repairing a cast iron farm tractor wheel for the Frankton, Indiana, Heritage Days, fundraising to buy Christmas presents for needy children and building tables for the Ivy Tech Engineering Department.  Also, they have raised enough money to present $1,000 to the AWS Indiana Section scholarship fund.

The award was presented at the AWS Section Appreciate/Image of Welding Awards Ceremony, during the FabTech Conference, in Chicago, IL on Wednesday, November 20 at McCormick Place.
