Score Requirements and Preparation Information

The COMPASS test is given to high school students planning to enroll in Dual Credit and/or Double Up courses during their junior or senior year.  To receive credit, students must be enrolled at the college and, if the course requires, successfully meet specific COMPASS testing requirements.  Students will not be issued college credit, regardless of course grade, if they do not meet the standardized score requirements for the course.
If students have acceptable ACT scores and/or SAT scores they may be waived from the test for specific courses. Contact the Dual Credit or Double Up advisor for further questions.
Students that are graduating and planning on enrolling at Ivy Tech should not take the COMPASS at a high school site.  Only Dual Credit/Double Up students are permitted to take COMPASS at the high school.  All other testers must come to Ivy Tech Assessment Center to take the exam.

    Policies and Procedures

Purpose

  • The COMPASS test is given to high school students planning to enroll in Dual Credit and/or Double Up courses. To receive credit, students must be enrolled at the college and, if the course requires, successfully meet specific COMPASS testing requirements.  Students will not be issued college credit, regardless of course grade, if they do not meet the standardized score requirements for the course.
  • Students that are not taking Dual Credit and/or Double Up classes should not take the COMPASS test at a high school site.  Students planning to enroll at Ivy Tech need to come to the Ivy Tech Assessment Center to take COMPASS for admission.

Testing Policy / Schedule

  • High schools may test their students using one or more of following methods:
  • Individual or large group testing at the high school by the high school.
  • Large group testing by Ivy Tech at the high school (15 students or more).  A school technology person must be present for the entire testing session.
  • Individual or large group testing at Ivy Tech.
  • Seniors planning on attending Ivy Tech after graduation and are taking COMPASS as entrance into the college must come to Ivy Tech to test.  They cannot test at a high school site.
  • The COMPASS exam cannot be accessible in open or public areas (libraries, study halls, common rooms, etc.)
  • COMPASS testing must take place in a closed and monitored (proctored) environment.
  • Scratch Paper:  Students taking the Math portion should be supplied with blank scratch paper for the exam.
  • Calculators: All COMPASS math exams allow use of a calculator and have one built into the exam.  Four function, scientific and graphing calculators are permitted.  Pocket organizers, cellular phones, typewriter keypads, calculators with built-in computer algebra systems are not permitted.

Exam Length

  • COMPASS exams are not timed.  However, students must be scheduled at a minimum of one hour per section to ensure enough time to finish the exam.  It is okay to schedule one section at a time.
  • If a student does not complete a test they have started, they have 30 days to complete it.  After 30 days, all partial scores will be lost and they will be required to restart.

Retest Policy

  • Students may take the COMPASS exam twice, with a minimum of 7 days between sessions, upon enrolling in their first DC/EC course.  Students may test once per high school grading period thereafter.  It is highly recommended that the students study before testing.

Special Needs Students

  • Special accommodations are available for COMPASS testing, but proper documentation from a special needs counselor is required.  ASSET is available as an option for some special needs students.

Reports

  • High school generated testing reports will be used by the high schools to track COMPASS testing locally using the following procedure. Please contact the Ivy Tech Assessment Center as your staff training needs arise.

NOTE: Campus-based bandwidth speed and actual testing performance are highly
related to each other and must be optimized for best results. COMPASS/ESL Internet
Version performance (such as the time between screen presentation) can be negatively
impacted by a high volume of campus-based network traffic and/or other factors that
may divert true bandwidth from the testing environment.
LAN/PORTS Settings:
COMPASS/ESL Internet Version campuses must provide testing workstations
configured to operate on the LAN using TCP/IP protocol, with access to Public Internet

Ports 80 and 443 are required for standard program operation.
