The AAS in Medical Laboratory Technology prepares graduates to become Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) who are capable of sitting for the national ASCP certification exam. MLTs perform sophisticated laboratory testing on patient specimens to assist the physician in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Graduates may choose to attend a university to obtain a bachelor of science degree to become Medical Laboratory Scientists. Bachelor, Master, and other graduate programs exist throughout the country.
The average starting pay for graduates in Indiana is between $15-$21/hour or $31,200-$43,680/year (excluding shift differential). Pay varies substantially throughout the state.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, rapid job growth is expected in the field. Most jobs will continue to be in hospitals, but other opportunities will increase as well. 155,600 jobs were recorded in 2008. 180,000 jobs are expected by 2018 which reflects an expected job growth of 16%, faster than average for all occupations. The number of job opportunities is expected to exceed the number of job seekers.
