Office Administration

OFFICE ADMINISTRATION

The Office Administration program prepares the student for a career in a professional office environment. As the business office relies increasingly on technology, organizations need well-trained, capable individuals to ensure that daily tasks are handled efficiently and effectively. In Ivy Tech's Office Administration program, students will learn the technical and interpersonal skills that will make them key players in day-to-day operations. Students will study the current Microsoft Office applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, desktop publishing, and other communications technologies, allowing them to develop skills that will move them to the top of an organization's must-hire list. Students may also test in Outlook and PowerPoint if those classes are chosen as electives.

Through the choices of options, students may choose to study:

Administrative: Administrative assistants, managers, and staff work in an automated office environment addressing current skills in word processing and office procedures.

Legal: Legal office administrators perform and coordinate a law office's administrative activities and disseminate information to staff and clients.

Medical: The medical office of today requires specific job skills focusing on providing effective customer service to patients, insurance providers, and other physician practices. Medical office administrators are responsible for a variety of administrative and clerical duties necessary to operate a medical office efficiently and effectively.

Software Applications: Students studying software applications will develop competencies with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases that will equip them with skills appropriate for most offices.

Customer Service or CSR: Program that prepares individuals to assist customers with inquiries and problems in frontline call centers, help desks, teleservice centers, and online. Includes instruction in user interfaces and user behavior; principles of hardware and software systems operation; customer interaction skills; telephone and e-mailing skills; data entry; and database and Internet searching and retrieval.

Certificates:

Microsoft Office Specialist (18 credit hours)

Short-term certificates are sequences of technical and professional courses that are industry focused and designed for workforce preparation. They provide access to targeted, short-term training in a discipline, and completers may sit for specific certification exams. Courses in certificate programs also apply toward technical certificates and associate degree programs in the subject area.

Completion of the Microsoft Office Specialist Certificate leads to employment opportunities, prepares for selected certification examinations in Microsoft Computer Applications (i.e. MS Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Access), and leads to completing an AAS degree in Office Administration.
