QMA (Qualified Medication Aide) 5 Credits

Prerequisites include, but not limited to: a current Indiana CNA Certification, 1,000 hours

of documented work experience as a CNA within the last 24 months, and letter of

This is an approved Indiana State Department of Health program consisting of 64 classroom

hours and 40 clinical hours in a long term care facility.

Dementia Care:  Fundamentals of Dementia

The Fundamentals of Dementia Care program has been designed to help all staff, but especially personal care staff, understand the basics of dementia care.  Topics include an overview of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, implementing person centered care, communication strategies, understanding challenging behaviors, improving activities of daily living, and helping families.

“Indiana State Department of Health Training Requirements: All nursing home staff with regular resident contact must receive six hours of dementia-specific training within six months of hire. Three hours of dementia-specific training is required annually thereafter.

Personnel assigned to the Alzheimer's/Dementia Special Care Unit must receive six hours of dementia-specific training within 30 days of the assignment. Three hours of dementia-specific training is required annually thereafter.

In facilities with an Alzheimer's/Dementia Special Care Unit, the designated unit director must have 12 hours of dementia-specific training within three months of employment and six hours annually thereafter."

Dementia Care: Strategies for Better Care Environments

The potential of the physical environment, both internal and external, to play an active role

in shaping and supporting independence, stimulation, and quality of life for individuals with

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias will be explored in this course.
