Trust us when we say we get it—college can be tough. Between juggling classes, work, family, and everything else life throws at you, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

Maybe you’re struggling to keep up with coursework, or you’re worried about a big exam.

Whatever the challenge, know this: you’re not alone, and there are ways to push through.

Dropping a class might seem like the easiest solution, but before you make that decision, let’s explore some strategies to help you see the course through. After all, every class you finish brings you that much closer to achieving your goals.

Here are 10 practical tips to help you overcome academic challenges and stay on track.

1. Reach Out to Your Professor

Your professors are here to help! If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to ask questions or request clarification on assignments. They might offer extra resources, suggest study strategies, or even point you to additional practice materials. A simple email or visit during office hours can make a big difference.

Example Email Prompt

Subject Line: Question About [Course Name] - [Your Name]

Email Body:Dear Professor [Last Name],

My name is [Your Name], and I’m a student in your [Course Name] class on [Day/Time, if applicable]. I’ve been struggling with [specific topic, assignment, or concept], and I was hoping you could help me better understand it.

[Optional: Briefly explain what you’ve tried so far, e.g., “I’ve reviewed the lecture notes and textbook, but I’m still having trouble with …”]

Would you be available to meet during office hours or suggest additional resources I could use? I’m committed to improving and would appreciate any guidance you can offer.

Thank you for your time and support. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
[Your Full Name]

2. Take Advantage of Ivy Tech’s Tutoring Services

Did you know Ivy Tech offers free tutoring?

Ivy Tech offers two types of tutoring: through Tutor.com and campus-based tutoring, which at Ivy Tech Indy is at Library & Tutoring Services (NMC 4th Floor). A link to Tutor.com is available in the Course Navigation menu of all online courses. You can also access the link through the Ivy Tech Student Resource Center. You can access tutoring support in math, science, and writing by visiting MyIvy, opening “Tools & Resources,” and selecting the “Campus Tutoring Services” icon.

Sometimes, a little extra help is all you need to get back on track.

3. Break It Down

Feeling overwhelmed by a big project or a mountain of coursework? Break it into smaller, manageable tasks. Create a to-do list and tackle one thing at a time. Celebrate small wins—like finishing a chapter or solving one challenging question at a time —to stay motivated.

4. Find a Study Buddy

Studying with a classmate can make learning more enjoyable and less intimidating. You can quiz each other, share notes, and explain concepts in ways that make sense. Plus, it’s a great way to build a support system.

5. Use Time Management Tools

Time management is key to managing your workload. Try using a planner, calendar app, or tools like Google Calendar to schedule study sessions, assignment due dates, and even breaks. Prioritize tasks and stick to your schedule—it’ll help you avoid last-minute cramming.

6. Take Care of Your Mental Health

Stress and burnout can make academic challenges feel even harder. Make time for self-care: get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks when you need them. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, Ivy Tech’s free counseling services are here to support you. Contact indianapolis-counseling@ivytech.edu for more information and to schedule an appointment.

7. Explore Online Resources

There’s a wealth of free resources online to help you master tough concepts. Consider Ivy Tech’s library database to provide extra explanations and practice problems.

8. Stay Organized

Keep your notes, assignments, and study materials organized. Use folders, binders, or digital tools like Microsoft OneNote to keep everything in one place. Being organized saves time and reduces stress when it’s time to study or complete assignments.

9. Set Realistic Goals

It’s okay if you don’t ace every assignment or exam. Set realistic, achievable goals for yourself. For example, aim to improve your grade by one letter or focus on understanding one challenging concept at a time. Progress, not perfection, is what matters.

10. Remember Your “Why”

When things get tough, remind yourself why you started this journey. Whether it’s to provide for your family, start a new career, or achieve a personal goal, keeping your “why” in mind can help you stay motivated. Put it on a Post-it note and tape it to your laptop so you’re constantly reminded every time you open it up.

Academic challenges are a normal part of the college experience, but they don’t have to derail your progress. By using these tips and taking advantage of the resources available at Ivy Tech, you can overcome obstacles and keep moving forward.

If you’re feeling stuck, don’t hesitate to reach out to your professors, advisors, or support services. You’ve got this, and we’re here to help you succeed!
