INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – June 25, 2024 – Ivy Tech Community College launched the Ivy Tech Healthcare Academy, a dynamic summer camp experience designed for high school students on June 4. The Indianapolis campus is proud to have recruited the largest cohort to date among its counterparts across the state. Participants are from surrounding area high schools including Avon, Ben Davis, Brownsburg, Connections Academy, Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern, Hope Intermediate Academy, Lawrence Central, Mount Vernon, Pendleton Heights, Purdue Polytechnic, and Warren Central. The program offers a unique and immersive introduction to healthcare professions, supported by a grant from United Healthcare.

The Healthcare Academy is a free program that aims to expose high school students to various healthcare career pathways. Students participating in the program will have the opportunity to earn college credit, receive CPR certification, develop hands-on clinical skills, and benefit from a $500 gift card. This initiative aligns with Ivy Tech’s mission and values, as well as those of United Healthcare, in fostering educational and career opportunities for young individuals interested in the healthcare field.

“The Healthcare Academy is an incredible opportunity for our students and community. This program not only provides students with valuable skills and certifications but also opens their eyes to the vast possibilities within the healthcare field. We are proud to support their journey and excited about the positive impact this will have on the future of healthcare in our region."

– Dr. Erika Di Porto, Ivy Tech Indianapolis Dean of the School of Health Sciences

In 2022, Ivy Tech Community College was honored to receive a $1,000,000 award from United Healthcare. This significant funding is being utilized to guide high school students toward direct service worker pathways through comprehensive healthcare career exploration classes and programs conducted during the summer break.

The Healthcare Academy project is meticulously designed to guide students interested in healthcare toward viable career paths through exploratory classes and hands-on programs. High school students will not only earn Ivy Tech credits but also gain industry-recognized skills and learn student success strategies within a college campus environment. The Academy spans an eight-week course term, encompassing credit courses, skills training sessions, site visits, and various activities that broaden student perspectives on the healthcare field.

The Indianapolis cohort will conclude their eight-week journey with a completion celebration on July 25. The ceremony will provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills before a wider audience while celebrating their achievements with family, friends, faculty, staff, and stakeholders associated with the project.

Media are welcome to attend the completion celebration and interviews can be scheduled with Ivy Tech Indianapolis’ School of Health Sciences leadership and possibly representatives from the participating high schools as well.
