Daniela Burch, a 37-year-old single mother, paralegal, and dedicated student in Ivy Tech Indianapolis’ Business Administration program, is redefining what it means to pursue education as an adult learner. While navigating caring for her two daughters and mother, Burch chose Ivy Tech as her stepping stone to build a better future.

Burch’s decision to study business administration stems from her unique perspective as a paralegal

“I’ve been working in the legal field for almost four years, and I love it,” she shared. “My role as a paralegal inspires me, but I also see my household as my little company—managing finances, planning, and providing for my family. Business administration equips me with the skills to do all of that better.”

Her journey to Ivy Tech began during the pandemic when she sought a career that offered safety and stability for her family. Her choice to become a paralegal was influenced by a family connection and her strong bilingual skills. Now, she dreams of attending law school at IU McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis after completing her degree.

Juggling full-time work, part-time studies, and family responsibilities hasn’t been easy. Burch credits meticulous planning, her daughters’ support, and flexible resources at Ivy Tech for making it manageable.

“I try to get seven to eight hours of sleep and use the time when my daughters are with their dad to focus on homework,” she explained. “It’s about finding a balance and making the most of my energy.”

Burch praises Ivy Tech for its understanding and supportive environment for adult learners.

“The platform (IvyLearn) is fantastic, and the faculty and tutors are incredibly responsive and compassionate,” she said.

Resources such as the library and free Microsoft Office Suite have been invaluable to her success. Additionally, classes like Student Success have provided her with tools to manage her responsibilities more effectively.

Ivy Tech offers a wealth of opportunities tailored to adult learners like Burch, including flexible scheduling, online and hybrid courses, and resources designed to help students thrive academically and personally. Burch’s experience highlights the transformative power of education, not just for personal growth but also for creating a ripple effect of positive change in her family and community.

“I was fearful of returning to college, but every day, I’m reassured I made the right decision,” she said. “Education will always pay off—personally, financially, and in our ability to help others. If you’re considering going back to school, don’t hesitate. It’s a decision that will change your life.”

Burch’s projected graduation date is 2026, and her story is a testament to Ivy Tech’s mission of empowering individuals through accessible and impactful education.
