Ivy Tech Community College in Terre Haute hosted its 22nd Annual Scholarship Scramble at the William S. Rea Park Golf Course on May 20, 2022. This event, presented by First Financial Bank, was established to benefit Ivy Tech Terre Haute scholarships. With this year’s proceeds of more than $30,000, Ivy Tech Terre Haute has raised over half a million dollars since the event’s inception.

First Financial Bank has served as the title sponsor for the Scholarship Scramble since it started and has contributed $220,000 to the event over the last 22 years. First Financial Bank’s participation in this event has provided the opportunity for them to establish a scholarship in their name. The Students First Scholarship awards $1,000 to nine students each year, which benefits first-generation students. Norman L. Lowery, President and CEO of First Financial Bank, said, “It’s important to our organization and our community that we support students pursuing their college dreams. Ivy Tech is focused on student success and this scholarship is a way for First Financial to help students stay focused on their academics, reduce college costs, and gain financial freedom as they start their careers.”

Sarah Smith, a Students First scholarship recipient, is one of the many who have benefitted from this scholarship. Smith states, “As the first member of my family to attend college, this scholarship was a huge boost to my confidence, and reminds me that my hard work is paying off and is getting me one step closer to earning my degree and starting my career.” Smith is pursuing her associate degree in sonography and plans to graduate in 2023.

More than 30 teams participated in the event, which included a variety of hole challenges and perks including a corn hole challenge, a round of Blackjack, an opportunity to earn a free putt from Chancellor Crooks, and a chance to try for a hole-in-one and win a new car courtesy of Terre Haute Chevrolet (no golfers achieved a hole-in-one).
