Every school has unique transferring requirements. The most important thing is to speak with your advisor at your home institution to make sure you are taking courses at Ivy Tech that will transfer. Ivy Tech cannot guarantee the transferability of courses to your home school.
Transfer Course Equivalencies for Other Schools
Before enrolling in courses at Ivy Tech, it is important to find out which course credits may transfer to or from other institutions. Use this helpful tool to find out how courses you have taken or plan to take may transfer to another college or university for credit.
The Core Transfer Library is a list of 88 courses that are pre-approved for transfer between all Indiana public college and university campuses, in addition to six independent colleges and universities (assuming adequate grades were earned). Core Transfer Library courses will meet the general or free elective requirements of undergraduate degree programs and most will also count towards degree program requirements, if an equivalent course is taught at the four-year campus you plan to attend.
Ivy Tech does offer courses that may transfer to a select set or even a single college or university. See your academic advisor to learn more about these courses.
Helpful Steps
To help determine if the classes you take at Ivy Tech will transfer to your home institution, follow these steps. They will prepare you to ask better questions.
At your home institution, check with your advisor at your current institution to determine:
If you have selected the appropriate course(s) to count towards your major.
Who, at your current school, should receive an official transcript once the course is completed.
TransferIN.net is a website managed by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. TransferIN can help you figure out how to transfer your credits to another institution. Each school has unique transferring requirements; however, TransferIn has developed step-by-step guides that cover the basic requirements most schools follow, so you can ask the right questions and make better decisions.
Step 2: Click on "Tools and Resources" at the top of the form
Step 3: Select "Unofficial Transcripts" from the list of items
Former Student - Official Transcripts
If you no longer have access to MyIvy because you have not attended in two or more years, you can request your transcript online. You will need to Create an Account with Parchment Exchange if you haven't already done so. Should you need to reset your password, you will click on "Forgot Your Password."
GHI Bill Benefits
Students using GI Bill Benefits must be certified by the institution that is issuing their degree. This is done by requesting a "parent" letter be sent to Ivy Tech. The “parent” school is the student’s school issuing the degree. The “guest” school is the institution where the student is taking credits for expected transfer back to the “parent” school.
If you plan to use GI Bill benefits as a guest student you will need to contact Veteran Services at your parent institution and request your school's VA Certifying Official send a parent letter to Veteran Services at the Ivy Tech location where you are registered.
You should also visit the Ivy Tech Veteran Services office to confirm that your benefits have been applied.
“I had such an amazing experience as a guest student at Ivy Tech. I was able to take classes during the summer and get ahead in my course work, which relieved me of a lot of stress and gave me more freedom to pick and choose my courses for the next semester. Not only did I enjoy the classes I took but I was definitely prepared for the classes I took when I returned to IU in the Fall.”
