Limited Admission Program Means More One-On-One Training For You
While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all training programs to have a maximum of 25 students per one instructor, Ivy Tech is dedicated to having a student-faculty ratio of 20:1 to give students as much personalized instruction as possible. This approach helps to ensure students are confident in what they're learning and have ample equipment to master their skills.
Given this approach, a cohort of 16-20 students can start the program each year in the fall. Applicants are admitted on a first-come-first-served basis.
Associate Degrees – Career-Ready Degrees
Ivy Tech's Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Aviation Maintenance Technology - Airframe Concentration degree program offers Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) general and airframe subject material. The content meets FAA Airman Certification standards. Students learn methods to repair and maintain aircraft ranging from Piper Cubs to the Boeing 787.
Instruction includes many hands-on projects and focuses on:
Sheetmetal bending, forming, riveting and other fastening derives in aircraft construction
Hydraulics
Landing gear

Are you already an FAA-licensed airframe and powerplant (A&P) mechanic? If so, you can receive valuable academic credit for your license and earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Aviation Maintenance Technology by taking only 16 credits of general education classes — compared to 64 total credit hours for the standard degree! This accelerated opportunity allows you to complete your degree in just 1-2 semesters, gaining greater opportunities to advance in your workplace.
Time to Complete/Courses
The Ivy Tech AAS in Aviation Maintenance Technology - Accelerated for FAA-Licensed Mechanics requires 16 credit hours, or one to two semesters, to complete. The 16 credit hours consist entirely of general education courses.
FAA-licensed A&P mechanics should apply to Ivy Tech Community College as a degree-seeking student under the Aviation Maintenance Technology program. You can apply online or in person at your local campus.
After you have been accepted to Ivy Tech, make an appointment with an instructor of the aviation program to arrange to receive credits for your FAA A&P license to be added to your transcript. Be sure to bring your license to the appointment. If a mechanic has only one-half of the license (airframe or powerplant, but not both) they are still eligible for the Aviation Maintenance AAS; however, it will be only for that particular concentration.
Earning Your Degree
Next, register for the standard general education credits needed to complete the degree. Work with your advisor to identify and register for those classes. You may attend those classes either face-to-face or online, as applicable. This accelerated option for FAA-licensed mechanics is offered by the Ivy Tech Fort Wayne campus, but the general education classes do not have to be taken at the Fort Wayne campus; the classes can be taken at any Ivy Tech campus.
When reaching your final semester, fill out the application for graduation and then get ready to receive your AAS and be eligible to walk in the graduation ceremony! You may also choose to transfer your credits to an eligible institution and pursue a four-year degree if desired.
