SACA® Basic Electricity

MFITELE13

Get SACA Certified

What You’ll Learn

The study of electrical laws and principles pertaining to DC and AC circuits is the focus of the course. This includes current, voltage, resistance, power, inductance, capacitance, and transformers. Stresses the use of standard electrical tests, electrical equipment, and troubleshooting procedures. Safety procedures and practices are emphasized. This course will use lecture, lab, and online simulation to prepare students for certification assessment through (SACA), Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA C-201 Electrical Systems I Certification).

Career Options

Electricians are a five-flame occupation according to Indiana's Department of Workforce Development's INDemand Jobs. This class covers key concepts that many employers have a hard time finding in candidates; voltmeters, wiring repair, hazard identification and more. This occupation - especially in a smart manufacturing setting - is expected to grow in demand by nearly 10% by 2031.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate proper safety precautions related to equipment.
  2. Define the following terms: voltage, resistance, current amperage, direct current, alternating current, and power supply.
  3. Identify electrical components and form a schematic diagram. Identify types of electrical mechanical switches (SPDT, DPDT, etc.)
  4. Calculate voltage, current, and resistance in series, parallel, and series-parallel circuits using Ohm’s Law.
  5. Perform voltage, current, and resistance measurements using the proper measurement devices (both analog and digital meters).
  6. Create a schematic drawing and complete single phase AC electrical service connections including meter bases and service panels.
  7. Identify basic principles and characteristics of transformers, resistors, capacitors and diodes.
  8. Calculate values for AC and DC resistive, inductive, and capacitive components.
  9. Assemble and test laboratory exercises including building single phase AC switched circuits, and circuits using mechanical relays.
  10. Demonstrate ability to read and interpret technical documents.
  11. Demonstrate ability to use various types of software applicable to course.
  12. Recall fundamental content to meet/exceed the cut-score for the SACA (Smart Automation Certification Alliance) C-201 Electrical Systems I Certification exam - Silver Certification.
  13. Demonstrate skills to obtain the SACA C-201 Electrical Systems I Certification exam - Gold Certification at a 100% of skill standard.
