What is the Modern Youth Apprenticeship Program at Ivy Tech?

Ivy Tech Community College Evansville has created a Modern Youth Apprenticeship Program, to provide training and post-secondary credit for Work-Based Learning for High School juniors and seniors. Students will learn skills in the workforce and earn college credits at no cost; and employers will have the opportunity to increase their employee base with individuals who have learned the skills needed. All programs and industry partners will be registered apprenticeships with the Department of Labor.

  • Ivy Tech’s Evansville campus, in partnership with Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, EVSC’s OptIN, and Deaconess Healthcare Systems has adopted a Modern Youth Apprenticeship Program model, to provide training and post-secondary credit for Work-Based Learning for High School juniors and seniors. Students in the program learn skills in the workforce and earn college credits at no cost to the student; and employers have the opportunity to increase their employee base with individuals who have learned the skills needed. All programs will be registered apprenticeships with the Department of Labor.

    • Students will attend classes at Ivy Tech 3 mornings a week and work at their employer’s 2 mornings a week.
    • Afternoons will be spent in class at their home high schools.
    • The students’  Work Based Learning experiences will be paid employment for up to 20 hours a week and total 650 paid hours over the span of  the apprenticeship experience.

  • Elementary Education Technical Certificate (For EVSC Early College Students Only)
    This is designed for students who want to work as a substitute teacher, para professional or teaching assistant; or they want to get their first year a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

    Students will complete 30 credit hours to earn a technical certificate. This includes 18 hours of general education through dual credit courses, and 12 credits earned over two semesters.


    Early Childhood Education Child Development Associate Credential
    The Child Development Associate Certificate is the best first step to enter the field of early childhood education. It can be used to meet Indiana state licensure requirements and Paths to Quality requirements for teachers as well as provide a Certificate in Classroom Support.

    Students will complete in three semesters, with six credits being taken each semester. One summer session is planned.

    Central Service Technician
    This credential is for a career that plays a critical role in preventing infection by sterilizing, cleaning, processing, assembling, storing and distributing medical supplies. The apprenticeship portion will take place with Deaconess Health System.

    Students will attend classes and up to 20 hours of work and learn for 3 semesters, which includes 1, 8-week session during the summer. Students will earn a Central Service Technician Certificate from Ivy Tech upon completion of the program. This stacks into the Surgical Technology associate’s degree for those students who would like to become a CST (Certified Surgical Technologist).

    Structural Welding Certificate

    The structural welding certificate is a 21-credit certificate that prepares a student for the workforce with the following industry certifications: OSHA 10; AWS Pipe Welding II Workforce Certification; AWS Shielded Metal Arc Welding II Workforce Certification; and AWS Gas Metal MIG II.
