IVY TECH INDY MANUFACTURING DAY

MFG Day, is an initiative of the Manufacturing Institute—the workforce development and education affiliate of the National Association of Manufacturers. Held annually on the first Friday in October, MFG Day—Manufacturing Day—helps show the reality and future of modern manufacturing careers by encouraging companies and educational institutions to open their doors to students, parents, educators, and community leaders. As manufacturers seek to fill 4 million high-skill, high-tech and high-paying jobs over the next decade, MFG Day empowers manufacturers to come together to address their collective challenges and build excitement about manufacturing careers so they can help their communities and future generations thrive.

    • Local schools are encouraged to bring students to explore in-demand careers in technology, mechanical engineering, and science. Industry representatives from leading companies will be available to discuss their fields, outline the educational pathways necessary for success, and offer guidance on accelerating students' learning and career development in these high-tech industries.
    • Modern technology, mechanical engineering, and scientific innovation are shaping the future, with engineers and innovators making a lasting impact on their communities and the world.
    • Careers in technology, mechanical engineering, and science are high-paying, cutting-edge, and highly skilled. These fields offer opportunities for every interest and skillset—from scientific research, design, and development to engineering, production, and advanced manufacturing. Whether in robotics, automation, materials science, or product innovation, there is a place for everyone in these dynamic industries.

  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), careers in technology, mechanical engineering, and science offer promising opportunities in terms of employment growth and compensation.

Overall Employment: Employment in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) occupations is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2023 to 2033. About 195,000 openings are projected each year, on average, in these occupations due to employment growth and the need to replace workers who leave the occupations permanently.

    Mechanical Engineers:

-Median Annual Wage: ** As of May 2023, mechanical engineers earned a median annual wage of $99,510.

Job Outlook: Employment for mechanical engineers is projected to grow 11% from 2023 to 2033, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. Approximately 19,800 job openings are anticipated each year over the decade, primarily due to the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or retire.

    Mechanical Engineering Technologists and Technicians:

Median Annual Wage: In May 2023, these professionals had a median annual wage of $64,020.

-Education Requirements:  Typically, an associate’s degree or a certificate from a community college or vocational–technical school is required to enter this field.

    STEM Occupations:

Median Annual Wage: The median annual wage for architecture and engineering occupations, which include many STEM roles, was $91,420 in May 2023, significantly higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $48,060.
