The School of Health Sciences at the South Bend-Elkhart campus offers degrees in Dental Hygiene, Health Care Specialist, Medical Assisting, Medical Laboratory Technology, Paramedic Science, and Respiratory Therapy.
In the Healthcare Specialist Program students can earn an Associate of Applied Science, a Technical Certificate, and 2 or more industry-specific certificates. The certificates are Electrocardiographic Technician, Medical Office Administration, Outpatient Insurance Coding, Pharmacy Technician, and Phlebotomy Technician, as well as certificates in Certified Nursing Assistant, Dementia Care, and Qualified Medication Aide.
Students who are interested in selective admission programs should choose Health Care Specialist as their major with an interest in the specific program they would like to enroll in. For example, if a student would like to apply for the Respiratory Therapy Program, they would choose Health Care Specialist with an interest in Respiratory Therapy as their major.

When you apply to the college, you would be accepted into the Healthcare Specialist program with a concentration in Dental Hygiene while you complete the prerequisite requirements. All applicants are required to take the TEAS exam. The Dental Hygiene program accepts a limited number of students each year and there is a separate application process.

Students earn an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene and are eligible to sit for the NBDHE (National Board Dental Hygiene) Student clinical education takes place in the onsite clinic at the South Bend location. Students treat patients of all ages from the community. Students must apply to the Dental Hygiene Program after admission to Ivy Tech and completion of prerequisite courses.
The Dental Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Students can earn a Technical Certificate and an Associate of Applied Science. Instructors Certified Dental Assistants. Students will be eligible to sit for the Certified Dental Assisting Board exam. Preclinical courses take place at the South Bend location at the onsite clinic. Student externships are completed in area dental offices. Students rotate through general practice as well as specialty offices. Students must apply to the Dental Assisting Program after admission to Ivy Tech and completion of prerequisite courses.
The Medical Assisting Program is accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The Medical Assisting Program offers an Associate of Applied Science and a Technical Certificate. The Medical Assisting Program at ivy Tech offers exciting, hands-on learning where student simulations are as “real life” as possible. Classes focus on patient care, venipuncture, electrocardiogram, vital signs, injections, medical coding, electronic charting and medical records. Students will learn in a variety of settings, including a computer lab, phlebotomy lab, laboratory skills lab, and clinical skills lab. This training prepares students to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant certification exam through the American Association of Medical Assistants which is a credential requirement for most employers.

All courses consist of both a lecture component and a lab component, and labs are set up as true to real life lab as possible. Students work on microscopes, chemistry analyzers, do microbiology testing, etc. In addition, the clinical experience gives them a semester of learning in a real hospital lab.

The Paramedic Science Program offers an Associate of Applied Science in Paramedic and a Certificate and Technical Certificate in Basic Emergency Medical Studies. The Paramedic Science programs are accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Upon completion of the medical laboratory technician program, you will be eligible to take the Board of Certification exam through the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
A person who chooses to become a paramedic is someone who wants to be a public servant and has the gift of compassion and caring. Students will benefit from 360 hours of clinical experience, 400 hours of an internship using hands-on experience in actual patient care settings. The curriculum is a careful mix of lecture, demonstration, in class skill practice sessions and clinical rotations. Through all these experiences, students obtain the knowledge and skills to allow them to function in the ever-changing world of Emergency Medical Services.
Emergency Medical Technicians provide out of the hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and permanent patients who access the emergency medical services EMS) system. EMTs have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life threatening emergencies.
