WHAT IS A SCHOLARSHIP?

A scholarship is an amount of money awarded to a student to help pay for college. Unlike a loan, which accumulates interest and has to be paid back, scholarships are gifts that don't need to be paid back. Scholarships are awarded to students based on a specific set of criteria, such as financial need, academic performance, college major, hometown, or other unique criteria. Scholarships can come from any number of sources, including governments, corporations, colleges (like Ivy Tech!), philanthropists, or any organization with goodwill.

WHO QUALIFIES?

To qualify for scholarships you must first apply and be accepted to Ivy Tech. After that, every scholarship has a different set of eligibility requirements, depending on the type of scholarship it is.

The most common qualification for scholarships is financial need, which is calculated as the gap between a student’s cost of attendance and the "expected family contribution"—usually an amount determined by your FAFSA.

Learn more about how need is calculated

Maintaining Eligibility

Some scholarships are renewable. In order to renew a scholarship, a student must adhere to the scholarship requirements to maintain eligibility.

IVY TECH SCHOLARSHIPS

Each year, Ivy Tech offers hundreds of scholarships worth over $8 million. In fact, there are more than 1,000 scholarship opportunities listed in MyIvy right now. Scholarships are offered at the statewide and local levels and there are options for all types of students.

How to Apply

To apply for most Ivy Tech scholarships, all you have to do is complete one scholarship application in MyIvy to see if you qualify. It's that easy! Occasionally, scholarships require additional steps, such as an essay or an interview, and some local scholarships require a separate application.

Scroll past the table below for more details on how to apply.

When are Scholarships Awarded?

They are typically awarded close to the beginning of each semester. You can see if you received an Ivy Tech scholarship by logging in to MyIvy and viewing your financial aid awards.

Academic Scholarships
  • Awarded to students who've demonstrated academic excellence or exceptional skill in an area (such as GPA)
  • Also referred to as merit scholarships
Student-Specific Scholarships
  • Based on a student's personal situation or affiliation

For example:

  • Identity-based scholarships such as those with Hispanic heritage, African American, women, LGBTQIA+, or learning disabilities
Employer or Military Scholarships
  • Offered to employees of a company or an employee’s college-bound student
