Pre-College Programs

  • TRIO Upward Bound serves as an intensive intervention program that prepares 9th - 12th graders for higher education through various enrichment courses, instruction in literature, math, and science and provides mentoring and support.

  • TRIO Talent Search assists middle and high school students to complete secondary education and enroll in post-secondary education. This early intervention program helps youth better understand their educational opportunities and options.

    If selected, we will:

    • Schedule an intake appointment to learn about program requirements and benefits
    • Complete a needs assessment and complete the intake process
    • Free one-on-one tutoring for general education classes
    • Academic, career, and transfer advising
    • Assistance with the financial aid process
    • Study skills training
    • Mentoring and personal support
    • Help identifying and applying for scholarships
    • Trips designed to expose students to academic and campus life at 4-year institutions
    • Assistance with applying for admission and financial aid at 4-year institutions
    • Academic and personal development workshops
  • The purpose of the Student Support Services Program (SSS) is to increase the number of disadvantaged low-income college students, first-generation college students, and college students with disabilities in the United States who successfully complete a program of study at the postsecondary level.

  • A Student Support Services project must provide the following services:

    • Academic tutoring, directly or through other services provided by the institution, to enable students to complete postsecondary courses, which may include instruction in reading, writing, study skills, mathematics, science, and other subjects.
    • Advice and assistance in postsecondary course selection.
    • Information on both the full range of Federal student financial aid programs and benefits (including Federal Pell Grant awards and loan forgiveness) and resources for locating public and private scholarships; and
    • Education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of students, including financial planning for postsecondary education.
    • Activities designed to assist participants enrolled in four-year institutions of higher education in applying for admission to, and obtaining financial assistance for enrollment in, graduate and professional programs.
    • Activities designed to assist students enrolled in two-year institutions of higher education in applying for admission to, and obtaining financial assistance for enrollment in, a four-year program of postsecondary education.

    A Student Support Services project may provide the following services:

    • Individualized counseling for personal, career, and academic matters provided by assigned counselors.
    • Information, activities, and instruction designed to acquaint students participating in the project with the range of career options available to the students.
    • Exposure to cultural events and academic programs not usually available to disadvantaged students.
    • Mentoring programs involving faculty or upper class students, or a combination thereof.
    • Securing temporary housing during breaks in the academic year for—
      • Students who are homeless children and youths or were formerly homeless children and youths; and foster care youths.
    • Programs and activities specially designed for students who are limited English proficient, students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, students who are individuals with disabilities, students who are homeless children and youths, students who are foster care youth, or other disconnected students.

What is TRIO Student Support Services?

TRIO Student Support Services offers services to 160 first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities as they pursue a college degree from Ivy Tech. Specifically, our goal is to provide individualized support to eligible students seeking to complete a degree or certificate from Ivy Tech. Admission to our program is not automatic; it is a privilege as we are limited in the number of students we can serve. Furthermore, you will be required to use certain services based upon our assessment of your needs.

TRIO activities are free and exclusive to participants. If you are a student who has been away from school for some time, a brand new students who feels unprepared for college, or a student who is wondering if you can success, TRIO Student Support Services might be the right place for you.

Who is eligible for TRIO Student Support Services?

The following criteria apply to ALL applicants:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or national or be eligible for federal student aid
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne and Warsaw in addition to needing academic support to complete a college degree or certificate from Ivy Tech within a four-year timeframe.
  • Be willing to maintain a 2.0 GPA.

An applicant must be ANY of the following:

  • A first generation college student (neither parent completed a four-year bachelor's degree)
  • A low-income individual, according to federal guidelines (in general, this means eligibility for a Pell Grant)
  • An individual with a documented disability registered with Disability Support Services

TRIO SSS is 81% funded by the U.S. Department of Education ($275,105 annually) with 19% additional funding from Ivy Tech Community College Central Indiana. The program serves 160 students annually.
