Beginning ceramics: Wheel Throwing

For true beginners curious about ceramics or students with some experience looking to rediscover their skills with clay, this class will take you through the fundamental techniques of working with clay on the wheel. Students will learn to throw from beginner forms (pulling cylinders) and expand to things that interest them! Bowls, cups, mugs, plates, teapots, vases, planters, etc. We will work towards personal goals of the student while improving technique and gaining information regarding throwing itself. No prior experience necessary and all prior experiences welcome!

This course is designed for people who have experience with shaping clay and who wish to explore their imaginations and broaden their skills in the art and craft of ceramics. The class encourages both independence and the interplay and incorporation of ideas and techniques of fellow ceramicists. That is, we will learn from and teach each other. We will also push ourselves in new directions and face failure together. We will use methods of hand-building, wheel-throwing, surface-texturing, and their combination to create pieces of art of underlying functionality, pure aesthetics, or both. This course is designed for experienced CLL students to have the freedom to explore the wheel and beyond without the structure of a traditional class. Under the supervision of your instructor, you will have time reserved in the studio in addition to open studio hours to build on the skills you’ve gained in beginner and experienced level classes toward individual goals and projects.

This class will be supervised by instructor Scott Barton, who will help shape and support your experience in this course, while emphasizing the freedom to explore and providing feedback toward your progression.

Unleash your creativity in this hands-on ceramics class where everyday items meet art. We’ll explore versatile ways to create ceramic pieces that not only hold your treasured keepsakes but can also incorporate them directly.

Learn basic hand-built clay techniques and discover how to glue or embed personal mementos—jewelry, broken dishes, or special keepsakes—into your creations. Your ceramic work can even be designed to hold portable elements like jewelry or kitchen utensils, turning everyday objects into unique and functional art pieces.

Hand building may be used to make just about any shape, but we will focus on the box. Easy-to-use templates will be provided in different shapes and sizes. The instructor has inserted china, glass, metal, stones, and seashells into her pieces. You are only limited by your imagination, so start collecting on your trips to flea markets, Goodwill, the beach, or your own cabinets.

Whether you’re designing for display or utility, this class encourages you to think outside the box and make something truly meaningful.

In all its events, Artists for Climate Awareness provides thematic environmental education, offering practical ways to get involved locally. As part of this commitment, a representative from a local nonprofit sustainability organization will be giving a short presentation on how their organization contributes to community-driven environmental initiatives.

Supplies: Clay, glaze, and clay tools will be provided. Participants may bring keepsakes or “found items”  to attach. In addition, in the first class, the instructor will collect $25 for supplies she contributes.

Jane Ellen Freund has been working with clay and mosaics for more than 30 years, first as a potter making wheel-thrown pieces and, in the past several years, creating pinch pots and other hand-built forms. She combines clay with materials such as broken china shards, glass from the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, handmade beads, metal, bolts, rusty nails and other recycled parts. She has a BFA from B.A. Carnegie Mellon University and has displayed her works and taught ceramics and art in Pittsburgh, PA, and Sarasota, FL. natural dyeing

Learn to harvest the rich colors of nature in this completely introductory dyeing class! We will discuss and experiment with a variety of natural materials, such as plants and plant extracts, as well as food you may find in your own kitchen! Additionally, we will cover how to modify dye baths in order to produce multiple colors from one single dye source, resist techniques to create designs on your textiles, and eco printing to capture the actual shapes of the plants with which we will dye.

beginning/intermediate Photoshop [virtual]

Do you wish your photographs looked better than they do straight from the camera? Maybe there's something you didn't at all mean to be in the photograph, or the color is not as great as you expected, or it's too dark, or the sky is just plain blah? The magic of Adobe Photoshop can fix all that and much more. In this course you will learn many ways to significantly improve your photographs and, beyond that, to create dramatic variations, incorporate new elements by using layers (the sky would look great with some birds in it?), add self-mats for a finished look, and create your own greeting cards with whatever you want to say written right on the picture.

NOTE: This is a hands-on course. It is recommended that students have the latest version of Adobe Photoshop on their home computers (available here) and will be provided with photographs to work on and detailed handouts.

STONEGATE LAB ACCESS: For students who would like access to a computer lab with Adobe Photoshop software available, we will have facilities available to participate in our Zoom meetings from StoneGate Arts & Education Center in Bedford, Indiana (please note that instruction will still take place via Zoom). Stone carving: Letters & Numbers

Beginning drawing

Drawing is fundamental to fine art processes such as painting, printmaking, and sculpture, as well as a variety of craft and design disciplines. This introductory class focuses on learning how to draw accurately from direct observation through patient repetition of a few basic steps. This classically based approach helps build and strengthen eye-hand coordination and the mind-body connection central to drawing, art making, and other creative processes.

In class we ‘start from the ground up’, introducing and discussing basic practices and concepts of drawing, such as ways of holding the pencil and making marks on paper. The class also discusses ways to prevent ‘getting stuck’, and ‘getting un-stuck’ if you do get stuck, helping provide a framework for ongoing improvement and enjoyment of your drawing practice.

We'll start by learning about the range of graphite art pencils, erasers, and drawing paper we will be using, then we explore the process of simply making marks. Building on this, we move to contour line drawing, then we spend some time focusing on important skills associated with accurately representing the shapes and proportions that structure observed reality. Optional skill building exercises to do outside of class to further your practice will also be discussed.

This process-oriented class helps build eye-hand coordination and suggests a calm, patient approach. Simple procedures are introduced and repeated that build on each other to help develop the mind-body connection and your drawing ability. Building this connection takes time and steady application, but can lead to experience of flow state in which time and distractions disappear.  

If you are eager to try out an art process for the first time, drawing can be a good starting point, as well as a fun way to explore the world and to communicate ideas and feelings. The materials are uncomplicated to use and relatively inexpensive, making drawing accessible for beginners. For those who already have some art-making experience refreshing or adding to your drawing skill set can help you take your artwork further. As such, this class may be useful for students with either modest or ambitious aspirations for their work, and who possess any degree of past art making experience.

discovering your museum: transforming your findings into your art

What better place than a museum to search out your Muse? In this 6-week course, you can choose an artist or artists to inspire your own art.  We will spend one session exploring and sketching works in the Eskenazi Museum on the IU campus (estimated cost of parking $10).  Then, for the remainder of the coursework, you will create your own art inspired by artworks or artists that you have encountered. 

During our time together, you will learn how to understand what attracts you about certain art and how you can leverage that knowledge to enhance your own expressive skills. The course is a combination of active art-creation and discussion. By the end of the course, you will have completed at least one piece of artwork in your chosen medium. 

The class is designed for students and instructors to interact and learn from each other. In this immersive experience, instructors will coach participants in observing and communicating about art in ways that are both positive and informative. We will use a website to dispense materials and resources, including Museum information, readings, assignments, and demonstrations of art mediums and techniques. (If you need printed materials instead, we will provide them.) Throughout, instructors and peers guide each other through the process of creating their own personalized artwork.

You may work in any medium about which you already know the basics. This course focuses on finding your inspiration and translating it into your artistic medium of choice; it is not focused on basic techniques, nor is it designed to replicate existing artworks.  Instructors can help with techniques of drawing or water-based media. Because our journey involves sketching in the museum, we’ll suggest some simple sketching supplies in the first meeting.

In this workshop, we will manipulate paper to create glorious flowers. We will use techniques such as tearing, folding, cutting, quilling, and our imagination. A variety of paper, from handmade to wallpaper, newsprint and beyond, will make it a happening experience!

This is a fabulous way to make sustainable art from things you already have.

There is no skill level required. You will only need your finely tuned hands and a pair of scissors! Paper provided; scissors available, but you might want to bring your own.

The movements will generally be whole body movements and imitate “real life” movements. Participants may wish to consult with their physician prior to taking this class if they have any medical issues.

No prior fitness experience is necessary, and modifications will be offered to make each exercise do-able for every student. This class is open to all adults ages 18+ and is perfect for anyone who wants to put more life in the years they have ahead!

acting on camera for adults: the close-up

Constellation’s Acting on Camera for Adults: The Close-Up is an on-camera, workshop-style class that focuses on the nuances of close-up screen acting through exploration of the technical distinctions between acting for the stage and acting for the screen. Students will learn techniques for creating effective on-camera close-up performances, including modifying vocal projection, gauging the size of gestures and expressions, maintaining eyeline, and understanding the camera’s ability to perceive a character’s thoughts. Classes consist of discussions, video examples, on-camera exercises, including monologue and scene work with video playback.

improv for adults: beyond beginner - Session 2

Constellation’s Improv for Adults: Beyond Beginner is a fast-paced, highly interactive workshop-style class that reinforces and builds upon improvisational skills and performance techniques. This class will focus on short-form improv, will offer an introduction to long-form improv, and is open to adults with previous improv experience (class, workshop, troupe, etc). Improv is a magical and collaborative art form that is not only fantastically fun, it boosts creativity, develops storytelling ability, enhances listening and communication skills, and builds confidence and resilience. Students will practice their skills in a safe, supportive, "Yes, and" learning environment.

Prerequisite: Previous improv experience (class, troupe, etc.).

improv for adults: summer all-play

Improv for Adults: Summer All-Play is an expanded version of Constellation's regular improv classes for improvisers of all experience levels -- from beginner to seasoned -- and will focus primarily on short-form improv. More advanced students will have the opportunity for breakout sessions to explore long-form. All improvisers will develop and build upon core improvisational techniques and principles, fostering skills in communication, collaboration, listening, adaptability, teamwork, and problem solving. Summer All-Play is a fantastically fun, welcoming, and supportive adult playground that will have you shouting, "Yes, AND!"

Class Showcase: A showcase will be planned for Tuesday, July 22 @ 7:30 - 8:30pm.

musical theater workshop: the broadway ensemble

Come explore the ensemble numbers of Broadway in this 10-week performance class for adults! In Musical Theater Workshop: The Broadway Ensemble, students will learn and workshop ensemble songs from classic and contemporary Broadway musicals under the direction of a seasoned, professional coach/teaching artist and musical director. Students will develop skills in stage etiquette, stage presence, musicianship, and vocal technique as they collaborate to bring musical numbers to life with exciting harmonies and light staging/choreography*. The class will culminate in a cabaret that showcases the ensemble with opportunities for soloists to shine. Musical Theater Workshop: The Broadway Ensemble is a prerequisite to join Constellation Singers.

*Light choreography will be tailored to comfort level and/or ability.

Prerequisite: Some singing experience preferred (voice lessons; classes; school/church/community choirs; talent shows; school/community stage productions/concerts/showcases, etc.)
