Make a Medical Impact:
Provide High-Tech Help

What You'll Learn

logoStudents in Ivy Tech's Medical Imaging program learn all about radiologic technology, the technology used to conduct x-rays from a JRCERT-Accredited program.

These imaging technique looks through the skin to capture pictures of patients' tissues, bones, and organs. This helps medical teams identify and diagnose medical conditions without invasive procedures.

The role of radiographers combines scientific knowledge, problem-solving techniques, and communication with the use of high-tech equipment to provide quality patient care.

Coursework covers seven key areas: technique, exposure, positioning, protection, physics, patient care, and ethics. In addition to classroom instruction, the program offers clinical practice and supplemental education in accredited hospitals and clinics.

Transfer Opportunities

While Ivy Tech's Medical Imaging program is designed to prepare students for an immediate career, some graduates choose to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor's degree. Transfer opportunities are available with several Indiana institutions, including Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), IU Kokomo, and the University of Southern Indiana. Online programs are also available throughout the country at various institutions.

Career Options

Graduates of Ivy Tech's Medical Imaging program can pursue certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). These certified professionals work in hospitals, clinics, and physician offices. Common job titles include radiologic technologist and radiographer.

Nearly all graduates start working in General X-ray roles. Then, after building a strong base of professional experience, graduates can pursue certificates in a variety of specialties ranging from prenatal care to orthopedics. In a specialty, graduates can hold roles using:

  • Bone densitometry
  • Cardiac or vascular interventional radiography
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Mammography
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Diagnostic medical sonography (Ultrasound)
  • Nuclear medicine*
  • Radiologist assistant*
  • Radiation therapy*

* Requires additional schooling

Completing the program also can lead to industry roles like sales, equipment application, education, IT/PACS, and management.

The Medical Imaging program can be academically rigorous but it is a rewarding program and career choice for the right student. The Medical Imaging program accepts a limited number of students each year, and there is a separate application process. Before you apply, review the following requirements and expectations for students in the program.

Basic Needs for Student Success

In order to be successful in the program, students will need to have access to transportation to courses and clinic. Additionally, Internet access is vital to student success. Ivy Tech finds that students with strong written and verbal communication succeed best in the program.

Mandatory Drug Testing and Criminal Background Screening

Admitted students must pay for and complete drug testing, a physical exam, and a criminal background screening. You can learn more about this process during orientation.

Orientation

If accepted, students will be required to attend a mandatory orientation session at the campus at
which they were admitted during the summer semester.

Summer Coursework

This program requires enrollment in summer coursework.

CPR

This program requires students to obtain CPR for Healthcare Providers prior to the start of the clinical
courses.

Essential Functions

Students need to meet the requirements outlined in the Essential Functions inventory.

Certification Requirement

Prior to beginning your work in any of the short-term certificates in Ivy Tech's Medical Imaging program, you must complete certification and registration with the ARRT in Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, or Sonography.

For Nuclear Medicine, registration also may be through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB). For Sonography, registration through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) also is acceptable.

Safety Information

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a modality within the Radiology Department that utilizes a very strong magnetic field that can be harmful to an individual entering the MR room if they have certain metallic, electronic, magnetic, or mechanical objects in their body.

The students of our program can have access to the magnetic resonance area so they must complete a safety form before starting their clinical practice. If a student indicates they have aneurysm clips, stents, neuro transmitters, or any metallic object within their body, they will be appropriately counseled and must not enter the MRI suite.

Frequently Asked Questions

To learn more about the Health Sciences (and Nursing) application process, watch the below video, read the FAQ, or contact your campus of interest.

Offers of Admission

Students can select up to three credential types and three campuses on the application. Offers of acceptance are for a specific credential and a specific campus. The offers are determined through eight rounds of auto-selection and six rounds of manual selection.

If you are accepted, you will receive an email from the online application system to your Ivy Tech email account offering you a seat in the program you selected. Offers are emailed beginning within one week of the application close date and continue until program capacity is met or one week before the start of semester classes. Each round of offers begins at 6:00 am and applicants have until 11:59 pm the following day to either accept or reject an offer.

Depending on their rank and offers, a student could potentially receive multiple offers. Once you accept one offer, you are immediately withdrawn from all other offers and you will be contacted by the chair or dean of the program with information about the program orientation date, time, and location.

If a student fails to respond, then the offer expires. If a student rejects an offer three (3) times, the application is removed from the auto-selection application pool but will then be available for manual selection rounds that occur later in the process.

You do have the ability to withdraw your application at any point during the admission cycle. However, once you withdraw your application, you will not be able to apply again until the next application cycle.

After You're Accepted

If you are accepted into the program—first off, congratulations!—you will be required to attend an orientation session at your local campus during the summer semester prior to beginning classes. An email will be sent following your acceptance with details about the session.

What If I Don’t Get Admitted?

The Medical Imaging program does not maintain a waitlist. Non-admitted applicants can reapply in the next semester’s application cycle. You may also want to meet with your advisor. Advisors can assist students in exploring other programs of interest in Ivy Tech’s School of Health Sciences if they have applied several times and have not been accepted into the program. Ivy Tech offers many programs similar to Medical Imaging that lead to high-demand jobs that may be new to you but fit your passion to help others.

What is Selective Admission?

The Medical Imaging program is a selective admissions program. This means we can only accept a small number of students each year.

Weighted Point System

A weighted point system is used to evaluate applicants for admission. Student applications are assigned points based on their grades in prerequisite courses. Point totals for applicants receiving admission offers will vary between campuses. Point totals are not shared.

General Education Weighted Point System

When multiple course attempts are reported on applicant transcripts (including transcripts from other colleges and universities), the highest earned grade of the first two attempts within a three-year period will be used for the selection decision score through the application period. Points for courses transferred from other institutions will be awarded based on the grade recorded on the transcript, provided transfer credit appears on the Ivy Tech transcript.
